Attrazione

The human-scale art piece was commissioned and designed to be placed in an open space area of the gardens of the Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol, Cyprus. The sculpture consists of two interweaved marble volumes interacting with each other. The project presents a distinct computational identity, expressly achieved through mastered control of a 7-axis robotic fabrication CNC machine. The technique departs from traditional sculpting practises into previously unseen methods for developing complex forms and unique finishes. In order for the desired geometry to be achieved, the computational specialists and the fabricators closely collaborated with the designer, effectively becoming one team. A physical model of the sculpture was initially 3D Scanned and then parametrically modelled to achieve certain optimization criteria. The digital model enabled the control of the stability of the two volumes leading to evolved forms reflecting optimum performance. In addition, each of the two parts of the sculpture was restructured as to be carved-out of the minimum rectangular volume of marble towards saving on material and fabrication time. The sculpture was finally fabricated, assembled and transported on site where it can now be visited by the guests of the hotel.
